Overview

Just like its namesake, Cairn keeps our YPs on the right path

Semi-Rural

Peaceful area

Cairn is a small home on the edge of a village near Colchester. Its quiet setting offers a safe base from which to venture out. Our team is a close-knit unit, and seeing the same faces more regularly allows better relationships with the young people. We use some psychodynamic practices to help our young people understand why they feel the way they do, and our carers focus on attachment to build strong foundations and restore self-belief.

Key Details

comfy home
Plenty of space

Cairn is a comfortable home with plenty of room for each of our 3 residents. Multiple living spaces allow everyone to do their own thing and to feel at home.

girls only
Single-Sex Home

While we would like the home to be open for anyone who needs it, we find that our current residents are much more settled without mixing. Therefore, Cairn will only be taking female referrals for now.

good options
Schools

Multiple options with good ratings and easy access means schooling from Cairn is not a problem. Our team work with the schools to create solutions that help our residents ease in at their own pace.

understanding
Dedicated Therapist

Should they want to, our YPs regularly meet with our therapist, who provides monthly reports to help both us and our young people keep a better current understanding of their minds and their needs.

best practice
Regular Training

With frequent training and advice updates, our carers are always using the best methods, both in general and in specific regard to our residents’ individual requirements.

quiet with access
Rural Location

Cairn is situated on the edge of civilisation, with both village life and green space accessible nearby. Using a car, there are easy connections to wherever the YPs might need to go.

Testimonials

“I have been for for over a year now and we have had ups and downs, but you have been one of the best paternal figures I’ve had in a long time.”

S
Young Person, speaking to Home Manager
“I believe in guardian angels and I have one, and it was my guardian angel that led me here.”

J
Young Person
“The YP in question has made fantastic progress emotionally and educationally since being with Shalamar. Staff relate to her well and accept her for her, they do not attempt to change her only encourage and allow herself to make her own choices to progress and improve her life experiences.”

Social Worker
Gloucestershire County Council
“I am really pleased with how they have supported this YP, they have really promoted her self-esteem and encourage her family time safely. They put a lot of effort into the drive to Plymouth and back and support her when she is there with check-ins. Really appreciated to be working so child focused.”

Social Worker
Gloucestershire County Council
“I feel that the home offer as much support as they can and feel that the YPs all make really positive progress. They do not have a high turnover of YPs which indicates that they feel settled and their needs are being met. It is nice to see some familiar staff faces.”
(Overall satisfaction out of 10?) “10, no concerns”
